Fair Play is one of California's newest recognized wine growing regions, a small district in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, just south of Placerville. Jonathan and Susan Marks saw the potential of Fair Play for growing the robust reds and rich white wines they love, and their vision has paid off in the excellent wines they produce from their estate vineyards. Having followed this winery from its first vintage in 1998, for me their zinfandel remains their most consistent and delicious red among the several varietals that they grow, full of rich ripe fruit that is spicy with black pepper and cedar notes. A touch of earthiness is typical of Sierra Foothills Zinfandels, but Cedarville's version is neither overly extracted or too dense to work with food. A real Zinfandel-lovers Zinfandel, and one of the best from this exciting new California terroir.
